Explanation of the Hack
The source code for the group's petitions leaked an API token with full admin access to the site's database.
The hacker used it to grab names, phone numbers, home addresses, and a detailed activity history of the group's members and deface their website with an anti-Computer Fraud and Abuse Act message.
The hacker told The Intercept they were motivated by the Tea Party Patriots’ role in helping advocate for the use of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for Covid-19.
